LAKE POWELL

Ahhh, Lake Powell. It's the bomb. I love the red rock cliffs, the smell of the Lake, the scorching heat and the cool water. There is beauty in all directions (except the mirror, because you don't do your hair or make-up all week....ha ha), but there is beauty in that too because nobody cares and it is SO relaxing. You wear your swimsuit from sun up till sun down and you play ALL day long. You can hike, float in the water, eat, lay on the big blue island and enjoy good company, go for a boat ride, wake board or tube, eat, play games, read, eat, have a nap, watch a movie, fish, eat, fling rocks up in the weeds like Nathan, hit golf balls in the weeds like Mike, Jason, Nate and Austin, go for a wave runner ride, cliff jump, or just do nothing. Oh and did I mention eating? Yes, plenty of good food and just about every treat imaginable, yikes! It is defiantly a good time. Big thanks to our awesome friends the Arnell's for inviting us.

24th of July

We had kind of a quiet Pioneer Day this year. Lacey & Jason and Katie had to work, and Emily went to a cabin with some friends. So, Mick and Nathan and I went to see a movie and then we met up with my Mom, Holley and Lexie and headed down to the Layton Commons Park for the Taste of the Town. This is where you purchase tickets and local restaurants come and give you a sampling of their menus for 1-2 tickets. They had a live band playing, the atmosphere was festive, and we end up with a belly ache!

SOMETHING FUN

On Sunday we thought it would be a fun change to head up in them there hills fer some supper. So we packed up some "hobo" dinners and away we went up Farmington canyon. If you've ever taken a drive up there you know it is not the most relaxing drive. It's beautiful, but NOT relaxing. Most of the way up on either one side or the other, it is a very steep drop off. Now I thought I was pretty brave, but Lacey, on the other hand was a baby. (sorry Lace) Once you get past the scary part, you pass through quakies and pines, and the view to the west is amazing! We stopped along the way, cooked our dinners, walked through wildflower meadows, and enjoyed being together. As the sun began to set, we drove to the highest point and sat out on a rock ledge and enjoyed the sunset over the Great Salt Lake. AWESOME!

Last Sunday Nathan turned 14. After careful consideration we broke down and gave him a cell phone. I don't think we would of caved in if he wasn't such a good kid. With the girls it was such a pain to monitor the texting of who, where, what and how many...yikes! It has been a week and so far so good. :) So, the birthday celebration was going good until....wa bam-crash! The sound of breaking glass! We ran to the backyard to see the first layer of glass in the dining room window shattered. Nathan had a big rubber snake he was flinging around and it just happened to fly into the window. Oops! It's a good thing it was his birthday.

The Graduate

Our cute little Kaitlyn graduated from Northridge High School on Friday June 5, 2009. It's hard to understand where time goes. Really. She was barely in the first grade it seems. Five years ago when Mick was called as Bishop, I remember saying..."you will be done serving as Bishop when Katie graduates from high school." It seemed so far away since she was just 12 years old at the time. Well, she graduated on Friday and Mick was released as Bishop on Sunday. It was also Nathan's 14th birthday on Sunday, and five years from now he will leave on a mission.

And so it goes...

Katie plans on attending Utah State University in the fall and pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Way to go Katie, we sure love you!

My Heroes!

On Saturday Nathan and Emily ran the Salt Lake City 1/2 Marathon. This was Nate's first race and Emily's third. Nathan finished the race in 1hour and 35 min. which put him second in his age division. The sad thing was that for some unknown reason his timing chip didn't register when he crossed the finish line, so he got jipped out of his additional medal. :( We know what a champion you are Nathan and that's all that matters! Emily also did great, she finished 20th out of 350 women runners in her age category. We are very proud of you both!
Watching runners come across the finish line at these races is so inspirational. It is amazing to me the range of ages and body types. You watch them go by and can't help but know that there is a story behind every single one of them and their desire to run. It's awesome!
In June our stake is hosting a 5K run, maybe I'll start with that. Hmmmm

As far back as January, Emily started telling me what she wanted for her 21st birthday. It wasn't clothes, shoes, perfume or even cash. She wanted the the entire family to go to the temple and do baptisms for the dead. I was thrilled because this is something we have been attempting for over a year now, but because of everyone's busy schedules it just hasn't happened. So, on the morning of March 14, thanks to cute Emily, we did baptisms at the Ogden temple. Everyone was there except for Jason who had to work. :(
Now that is an awesome day!

I don't know what it is about where we live in East Layton, but every time a snowstorm comes along, we get clobbered! This last storm on Tuesday left us a lovely 15". I hope you're having fun in Hawaii Sherry. :)

Chilly Fun!

Two years ago I decided to go skiing with some friends. I was terrified! I hadn't been skiing since Lacey was a baby, 22 years to be exact. Everyone said, "it's like riding a bike". I went and had a blast! I have only been one other time since then, until Tuesday. My friend Sharon and I decided that since school was out on that day, we would go. We loaded up the car with Nathan, Katie, Haylie, Makelle, and Emily, and away we went. It was a beautiful sunny day, high above the smog. It is amazing to me that your mind and your body can remember how to do something after that long, I mean normally I can't even remember what day it is.

A couple of weeks ago we scrounged us up a tubing hill near our house and had a little fun. I will admit though, that I was a chicken and only watched. In January of 1993, I went tubing with the youth in our ward, and broke my foot! I was in a cast for 8 weeks and on crutches for 2 more. My sense of adventure died that cold, icy day on the hill at Flat Iron Mesa Park.

I have been a wussy ever since.

Last Saturday Katie got her wisdom teeth out. No big deal for most kids. But Katie looks like someone beat her up! Her cheeks are still huge, and they have a giant bruise on them. She even has a bruise under her eye. What's even worse, she is still in a lot of pain and her breath reeks! Poor Katie Bug!

2008 "A Year In Review"

Well, I could probably win the world's worst blogger award. With 2009 I hope to do a little better. It's not a huge priority for me. It's just something that's sorta fun, and if I get around to it fine and if not that's fine too. Since I started the Quigley blog late in the year, I thought I would do a recap of our family's events for 2008. So here we go... We, (I say we, because it truly turns into a family event) started the year knee deep in high school drill team. Katie and the Cardinelle's that is. There were some weeks we hardly saw her. In January that hard work paid off and we took the region 1 title for the second year in a row. Whoohoo! I will have to say it was pretty awesome!

They finished the year going to Florida and coming home the "Grand Nationals Champions"!
It was so time consuming that Katie decided not to try out again. I don't think she has ever regretted her decision, and it has been nice to have our daughter back.

In the spring my nephew Nick Hendershot got married to Niki Cook. Yes, Nick & Niki! It is always a fun occasion to gather for a wedding!

Nathan turned 13 on June 7th! Oh no... another teenager!
He got his first set of golf clubs for his birthday.

July was a full month for everyone. We went hiking Adams canyon on the fourth. This was the first time Emily's boyfriend Judd joined us. I guess we didn't scare him too bad because he came back.

Mick's parents went to the temple for the last time together to do sealings for their ancestors. It was quite the event and well worth it!

We got permission from the temple workers to have them leave in their white clothes and change at home since that would be easier. On the way home their car battery went dead in the middle of the road. We caused quite a traffic jam while we tried to jump the car and had them change from one car to another in their "whites". Yes, we got some interesting looks! Thanks to Mick's sister Susan for making this day happen!

Lake Powell was awesome in 2008. Their were no house boat problems and no broken legs!!! Yeah!

In August, and after a lot of sweat and tears, Lacey graduated from UVU with a degree in psychology. So on 08/08/08, we threw her a surprise party!

On September 21, my mother Sharon Glauser Mattson, celebrated her 7oth birthday. We had a fun birthday dinner for her at Archiblads Restaurant. After dinner we showed a slide show tribute with pictures of her entire life.

Emily ran her first marathon on October 4th in St. George. It was a chilly, rainy day, but that didn't slow her down. Most of the family was there to see her cross the finish line. Then we waited for uncle Lon to finish. Congratulations Emily and Lon!

On Saturday November 8, Mick's dad Herald Mickey Quigley I, passed away with his family at his side. He was two days from turning 80 years old. He lived a full and wonderful life and was an example to all. Our niece, and his granddaughter Heather Krantz, died about six weeks earlier. The following picture is of Heather and Grandpa shortly after they started their chemotherapy treatments.

We ended the year with a wonderful Christmas. Reflecting on our Saviors birth, life and ministry. Spending time with family and friends. We are indeed blessed in so many ways!

Our family's wish for each one of us for the coming year, is to be kind and loving, and continue to have joy in these dismal times, and live our lives with no regrets. Bring on 2009!

So I don't know if Nathan was feeling a little jipped because I didn't post pictures of him on the blog or what. But last Sunday during the snowstorm, he got this grand idea to go jump on the trampoline and go down the slide in his underwear. Normally he doesn't let ANYONE near him or even catch a glimpse of him in his underwear!!

On Thanksgiving day my sister in law Linda Mattson, Elle Photography, http://www.ellephotos.com/, http://ellephotographyblog.blogspot.com/, took some fun pics of Katie and her son Taylor. They are part of Linda's senior picture portfolio. She does a great job...very creative! Anyway, it made me sad to see Katie so grown up and also made me realize how short her time left at home really is. Wasn't it just yesterday she was my curly headed little girl with that mischievous twinkle in her eye?

I love this time of year because it gives us all a chance to reflect on the things we are truly thankful for....I love my sweet, sweet, family. I can't even imagine my life without them. I may at times get impatient with y'all, but know that I love you with all my heart. I am grateful for the gospel in my life, what a comfort and blessing it is. I am thankful for wonderful friends that I know I can count on for anything...thanks for ALWAYS being there through thick and thin. On a little lighter note...I am thankful for laughing, good movies, going out to lunch, sunshine, dates with my hubby, playing cards with the gang, peanut M&M's, 94% fat free microwave popcorn, and Diet Coke. Life is good!
